The assumption almost every home care page makes

Read the other agency pages for this city and you will notice they are all addressed to somebody's child. Your mother. Your father. Bring your questions to us and we will help you look after them.

That is a reasonable default nationally. It is a poor fit for Fort Lauderdale, where a large share of the people who will need care are single, or partnered without children, or have adult children living a thousand miles away, or are estranged from them.

If that is you, nobody is going to notice that you have started struggling and step in. You are going to have to build the arrangement yourself, in advance, and that is a genuinely different task from the one these pages describe.

The good news is that doing it in advance is far better than doing it in a crisis. You get to interview people. You get to change your mind. You get to set it up the way you want rather than the way a discharge planner needs it done by Friday.

What to put in place, in order

• Get a health care surrogate designated, in writing: Under Florida law you can name someone to make health care decisions and receive medical information if you cannot. Without it, the person you would actually want consulted may have no standing at all, and a hospital may go looking for a relative you have not spoken to in twenty years. This is the single most important item on the list and it is the one most often left undone. An elder law attorney in Broward can do it properly, and it is worth the appointment.
• Decide who your emergency contact actually is: Not who it should be. Who will genuinely answer the phone at 3am and come.
• Choose an agency before you need one: Ask for an in-home assessment while you are well. You will learn more from watching how an agency handles a non-urgent inquiry than from any brochure.
• Write down what matters to you: Not medical preferences, the ordinary ones. What time you get up. Whether the television is on. Whether someone talking to you constantly is comforting or unbearable. Caregivers cannot guess, and this is the information that makes care tolerable rather than merely safe.
• Sort out access and keys deliberately: Who holds one, who does not, and what happens if you cannot get to the door.

Care for LGBTQ+ older adults in Fort Lauderdale and Wilton Manors

Greater Fort Lauderdale is one of the most established LGBTQ+ communities in the United States. Wilton Manors, a city of roughly twelve thousand people, has one of the highest concentrations of LGBTQ+ residents anywhere in the country, and the area is consistently named among the best places in America to retire as an LGBTQ+ person.

Which means a substantial number of the people arranging home care here are doing so with a specific and reasonable worry: whether they will have to think about how they are perceived by a stranger who is in their home every day.

Our position is that a client should never have to manage that. Caregivers are matched to clients deliberately, and if a match is not right for any reason you are not obliged to explain it. Tell the coordinator and we change it.

Three practical points that come up more often here than elsewhere:

• A partner who is not a spouse may have no automatic legal standing in a medical decision: The health care surrogate designation fixes this and is worth doing regardless of how long you have been together.
• Chosen family is often the real support network: It is frequently not who is listed on the paperwork. Tell us who actually matters. We will treat them as the primary contact if that is what you want.
• Some people have spent decades being careful about disclosure in medical settings: For entirely rational reasons. We are not going to ask you to be a test case. What you share is yours to decide.

SAGE, and support that is not paid care

SAGE is worth knowing about independently of us. It is a long-standing nonprofit for LGBTQ+ older adults that offers services in Broward and Miami-Dade counties, and its friendly visiting program pairs volunteers with older adults for regular visits and calls. That is a different thing from paid care and can sit alongside it.

Medicare covers skilled nursing and therapy after a qualifying hospital stay, and covers aide visits only alongside those skilled services. It does not fund ongoing daily personal care, which is what most people arranging care for themselves actually need.
