Why there are so many agencies here

A large hospital, an older population, and a dense residential corridor produce steady demand, and steady demand attracts supply. Depending on which directory you consult, somewhere between sixty and a hundred and fifteen agencies list themselves as serving this city.

Most of them advertise the same services in the same words. So here is what to actually look at.

The question almost nobody asks: which license?

Florida issues two different licenses for care at home, and the difference is substantial.

• A licensed home health agency employs its caregivers: The agency handles supervision, payroll taxes, workers' compensation and liability, and it is accountable for the care delivered.
• A nurse registry refers self-employed caregivers to you: The caregiver is an independent contractor. The registry is a referral service, and the working relationship, along with much of the responsibility, sits between you and the individual.

Why we hold both licenses

Neither model is wrong. A registry can offer more flexibility and sometimes lower rates. An agency generally offers more accountability and easier cover when someone is ill. But you should know which one you are hiring, and many families never think to ask.

Six other things worth asking any Delray agency

Ask any Delray Beach agency these six questions. If one of them is uncomfortable answering, that is your answer.

• Who supervises the caregiver, and how often?: Ask whether a registered nurse writes the care plan and how frequently they review it. Ours does, on every plan.
• What screening was done?: Florida Level 2 background screening is fingerprint-based and checked against state and federal databases. Ask whether every caregiver has it.
• Who answers at two in the morning?: Not the answering service. Ask who can actually make a decision and send someone.
• What happens when the regular caregiver is sick?: This is the question that separates agencies in practice. Ask how a same-day replacement works and how often it happens.
• How is the caregiver matched?: Availability, or temperament and the client's situation? The honest answer from most agencies is availability.
• What is the exact hourly rate, in writing, before you commit?: And what is billed differently at night, at weekends and on holidays?

Paying for care in Delray Beach

Delray Beach is in Florida Medicaid Region G, the managed care region created in February 2025 that runs Palm Beach together with Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee under contracts to 2030. Four plans carry Long-Term Care benefits in every region of the state: Humana, Sunshine Health, Simply Healthcare and Florida Community Care.

If you are not enrolled yet, Medicaid Long-Term Care eligibility is screened by the Area Agency on Aging of Palm Beach/Treasure Coast, the designated agency for Planning and Service Area 9. Start that before you need it rather than during a discharge.

Medicare is narrower than most families expect. It funds skilled nursing and therapy after a qualifying hospital stay, and funds aide visits only alongside those skilled services. Ongoing daily personal care is not covered.
